TDA Holland Supports War‑Affected Women Through Livestock & Food Assistance in Tigray

Samre & Hawzen, Tigray — The Tigray Development Association (TDA), with funding from TDA Holland and in partnership with Axumawyan Aid Organization, has successfully completed a major livelihood recovery initiative supporting 22 war‑affected households in Samre and Hawzen woredas.
The project focused on restoring productive assets and improving food security for highly vulnerable families, 86% of whom are women-headed households.
Through a transparent, community‑based targeting approach, beneficiaries received a comprehensive package of livestock and food support, including:
- 22 cows
- 22 donkeys
- 113 shoats
- 220 pullets
- 20,000 kg of food items
- 200 liters of sunflower oil
Each household received one cow, one donkey, five shoats, ten pullets, and essential food items. The support is already strengthening income-generation opportunities through milk, eggs, and small livestock production, while donkeys assist with transportation and farming activities.
The project achieved 100% budget utilization (2.86 million Birr), and was implemented through six distribution rounds to ensure proper livestock selection, quality assurance, and community participation.
Local officials and beneficiaries expressed appreciation to TDA Holland, noting that the “package‑based approach” uniquely empowers women, promotes self‑reliance, and accelerates recovery from conflict-related losses. Beneficiaries also reported improved well‑being and renewed hope.
TDA recommends continued technical follow-up, veterinary services, and capacity-building training to ensure long-term sustainability and to scale the intervention to additional communities.
